Phew, just finished a series of projects to clear out old news. Old emails, old calendar meetings, old business cards, old files, old books, old stuff in general. It was difficult at first, but once I got started, I was hauling truckloads to Half-Price Books and The Salvation Army. It’s that time of year for me – evaluating the current year and planning for the next. Scheduling real vacation time – long overdue.
Think of the noise going on during a rock-n-roll concert. You can’t hear the person next to you without shouting, right? Making room for new ideas, new business partners and new prospects are under the same principals. If you have so much distraction going on in your electronic, career and personal worlds – you won’t see the email that is really important, and be able to not only read it, but digest it. Too much noise will keep you from asking if or how you can leverage the emails you are receiving. Make a quick decision to delete, file or take action on it right then and there.
Strengths Finder tells me that I’ve got an interesting cocktail of strengths – Input, Positivity, Strategic, Connectedness & Futuristic. If I allow Input to run the show – and don’t allow the strategic and futuristic attributes to thoughfully organize or share the input – it leads to stagnation. Imagine walking through a swamp up to your waist. Slow and difficult. Creating a thoughtful revolving door for the input allows me to accellerate not only progress for my own business – but also for my clients.
As someone who helps businesses create their own innovative cultures – I am most effective when my mind and spaces are clear. A Feng Shui Master would provide countless before/after situations where clearing out the old made way for the new. One that comes to mind is a business that moved into a new building, and couldn’t seem to get their business going. After clearing the space energetically, the old ‘bankrupt’ business energy made way for the new ideas and clients. Hmmm.
What are some things you can do today to bring new ideas and business into your world? Hire a professional organizer. Yes – there are those people out there who absolutely can assist with organizing your world so that you can focus on new things. Schedule 30min a week to UNSUBSCRIBE from those emails you are getting but never look at. They are like the magazines we used to get that piled up in the corner. Now, because the information is electronic, we let the piles get bigger. Take vacation from your electronics world. Go outside and get dirty. Go have lunch at place you’ve never been and strike up a conversation with the waiter or another patron. Go to a pottery studio and paint something random from the shelf. (Yes, boys can do this, too.) Go get lost from your routine and listen for the blue birds that bring the next magic gift into your life.
